2006 Day of Prayer and Fasting

Sunday, January 15, 2006

On Monday, January 9, 2006, the County Judge Tom Head and  the Lubbock County Commissioners Court  signed a proclamation encouraging the county to participate in this day of pray and fasting for God's blessings on the South Plains.  Click here to see that proclamation

On Thursday, January 12, 2006, the Mayor Marc McDougal and the Lubbock City Council made a similar proclamation declaring thanks to God for the blessings of last year and declaring utter dependence upon God for the future of our community.  Click here to see the text of the Mayor's Proclamation.

Lubbock's City Council, the Lubbock County Commissioners Court and Pray Lubbock encouraged the community to distinguish Sunday, January 15, as a day of prayer and fasting for God's blessings on our community.

I Samuel 2:30 says,  "…Those who honor me I will honor…" This phrase sums up the concept of our day of prayer and fasting: that we want to honor the Lord in prayer that He might honor Lubbock, Texas with His blessing, so that we might honor Him with our lives.

Here are some suggestions for prayer:

Thanks to God for the answer to prayer for rain in 2004 and for the blessings of 2005.  (Remember: 2004 was the second wettest year on record - remarkable considering 2003 was the second driest year on record!

Thanks to God for the record-setting cotton harvest for 2004 which, by all estimates will be surpassed by the record crop of 2005.

Pray for rain on the South Plains including the area around Lake Meredith.  Immediate needs to quench the dry lands and threat of fire.  Long-term, to replenish the reservoirs and aquifer.

The number of positions being determined by the elections this year 2006 is significant.  Pray for God's will to be done through our election process.  The following positions will be decided this year:

Lubbock County is in the midst of a major building project - the new jail.  Also pray for appropriate decisions regarding the Medical Examiners Office.

Pray for the success of the North-East Lubbock redevelopment project.

Pray for the welfare of our community as described by Jeremiah 29:7.

Pray for the City-Council's decisions regarding water availability in our future.

Pray for our law enforcement officers and their protection.

Pray for a decline in crime, murder and untimely death.

Here are some ideas about how to observe this day:

·        Organize the entire service around prayer for our community

·        Include this emphasis in the pastor’s prayer

·        Recognize community leaders in your congregation and have them stand as you pray for our community

·        Hold a special afternoon or evening prayer service for our community

·        Encourage congregational members to fast in some way on the 15th i.e. fast for one meal, fast until sundown, fast from TV, etc.

·        Replace the coffee urns and boxes of donuts with signs reminding people to fast and pray for our community.

Mayor Marc McDougal,

County Judge Tom Head

and Pray Lubbock

called our community to observe

Sunday, January 30, 2005

as a day of prayer and fasting for our

community, state and nation.
