New Volunteer Registration Efforts for Hurricane Assistance Suspended

The registration of new volunteers to help with the preparation of potential evacuees from the Texas coast has been suspended until further notice. The City would like to thank all the volunteers who signed up on Sunday and Monday, and would like to let them know their help will be needed. Those volunteers will be contacted in the near future with more details.

"We are grateful to those who have volunteered their time and energy to help with the preparations," said Kevin Overstreet, emergency operations director for the City of Lubbock. "The citizens of Lubbock have always shown a willingness to help those in need and we truly appreciate their efforts."

Over the weekend, volunteers helped prepare the City Bank Coliseum and the Civic Center to house up to 1,000 potential evacuees from the Texas coast in advance of Hurricane Dean.

Volunteers needed to prepare for potential evacuees

Volunteers are needed to prepare for potential evacuees from the Texas coast in advance of Hurricane Dean. City Bank Coliseum and the Civic Center are being prepared to house up to 800 evacuees if needed. Volunteers are needed to assist with preparations at the facilities. Individuals interested in volunteering may sign up between 1 PM and 9 PM Sunday or 8 AM to 8 PM Monday at Mahon Library, 1306 9th Street. Enter the library through the north door. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

"Our community has always been ready to help when others are in need," said Clinton Thetford, assistant emergency management coordinator. "We are calling on citizens to help us provide for the needs of fellow Texans who may be displaced by the hurricane."

Emergency management officials were asked to begin preparedness measures during a 10 AM conference call with state emergency operations officials. The Lubbock Emergency Operation Center was activated earlier today and will continue 24 hour operations as long as needed.

"We are preparing for the potential receipt of evacuees on Monday or Tuesday," said Kevin Overstreet, emergency operations director for the City of Lubbock. Hurricane Dean is currently a Category 4 storm, but it is expected to strengthen to Category 5 which is the highest level for tropical weather systems with sustained winds higher than 155 mph.

The City Council met in an emergency meeting at 5 PM on Saturday to approve a resolution to house evacuees and incur expenditures of up to $500,000. The expenses will be
reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
